MENTORSHIP POLICY



St. Gregorios dental college, Chelad aims at providing excellent health care along with quality teaching and promotes research in dentistry. Students are the base of institute on which an institution is built upon. Hence policies designed for overall improvement of students is the prime focus our institute. Our mentor mentee programme involving students, teachers and parents is designed in such a way that it targets the prime areas of concern and brings out the best result achievable. It covers the entire BDS and MDS course.

Objectives

  • Understanding the challenges and opportunities present in the college and develop a smooth transition to campus life.
  • Improving the academic and cocurricular skills and motivating and guiding them towards their career development.
  • Supporting academically weak students or poor performers and to guide them with academic and personal issues.
  • Proactive identification of problems in students, if any and to bring them to the notice of the concerned authorities.

Procedure

  • Students will be assigned Mentors (Teaching faculty) right from the first year of the program.
  • Each mentor will have a reasonable number of students as Mentees.
  • The mentees preferably (may not be possible in some cases) will be assigned to the same mentor for the entire duration of the course of study.
  • The mentor will meet the mentees on a regular basis and record the outcome of the meeting in a prescribed format. The details about each mentee will be recorded and periodically updated.
  • The mentor should identify the students performing exceptionally well in curricular or co-curricular activities and report to the head of the institute/department for providing further motivation and encouragement to advanced/gifted learners.
    The mentor should also identify the students whose performance/attendance is below par. The mentor should interact with the student and sort out the cause for the concern. If required the mentor can involve the parents, Head of the department or the Principal for
    reforming and improving the student.

Areas of Review

  • Attendance: The mentor shall observe and monitor the attendance of the mentee. He/she should advise and take necessary follow up actions with regard to students who do not meet up with the attendance normsprescribed by KUHS.
  • Academic Matters: The mentor shall also keep a track of the academic performance of mentees including all the examinations and help the mentee through counselling or by arranging extra classes, if necessary.
  • Behaviour, Attitude and Discipline.
  • Health and physical well being of the student.
  • Achievements, talents and co-curricular activities of the student.

Duties/Responsibilities of Mentor

  • Mentors are required to keep track and record of their mentees with reference to academics, attendance, discipline and overall development.
  • Call meetings of all mentees at regular intervals and record their findings in the log book provided.
  • Support students academically and emotionally.
  • Contact parents to inform the progress of their ward, whenever required.
  • Maintain a record of the progress made by the identified slow learners and take remedial actions wherever required.
  • Mentors, if required, should opt individual counselling with their mentees.

Duties/Responsibilities of Mentee

  • Fill personal information in the form at the time of joining the mentor mentee program.
  • Keep the mentor informed of details of attendance, academic progress, challenges, achievements and other concerns.
  • Attend meetings regularly and approach the program with respect, professionalism and an open mind. Take full advantage of opportunities provided by the mentor.
  • Mentee should repose confidence in the mentor and seek his/her advice whenever required.
