Ethics In Dental Practice

  • Date of Event: 08-05-2024
  • Event Venue: College Auditorium

On May 8th, 2024, St. Gregorios Dental College hosted a CDE programme titled Ethics in Dental Practice. The program's goal was to look at moral dilemmas and issues from the perspective of recent postgraduate students, which is something dentists deal with on a regular basis in their work. The purpose of the lecture was to use case studies to motivate practitioners to engage in cross-border ethical dialogues. This allowed participants to share best practices with one another. The chairman of the department of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopaedics is the renowned Kochi orthodontist Dr. Binnoy Kurian. He discussed how the four moral concepts of beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, and patient autonomy may be used to apply morality to dentistry.

In addition, he pointed out that this programme offered in-depth insights into difficult subjects and included tips on how to handle some of the more difficult dental ethics concerns, such informed consent. He discussed in great detail the possible legal repercussions for a dentist who violates ethical standards. He achieved this by looking at relevant legal frameworks and real-world examples of what happens to businesspeople—or maybe I should say, "Professionals"—who act unethically. In other subject areas, students might lead group talks based on made-up scenarios in which they may pretend to be dentists and provide peer-to-peer guidance as they worked out the moral conundrums.
