Ethics In Dental Practice

  • Date of Event: 25-10-2021
  • Event Venue: College Auditorium

Ethics in Dental Practice, a CDE programme, was held at St. Gregorios Dental College on October 25, 2021. The program's goal was to address ethical dilemmas and challenges that dentists face on a daily basis in their practice from the perspective of incoming postgraduate students. In order to do this, the seminar aimed to foster cross-border ethical discourse among practitioners by utilising case studies. As a result, participants were able to share best practices with one another. The chief of the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics is the renowned Kochi orthodontist Dr. Binnoy Kurian. He discussed how the four moral principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, and patient autonomy might be used to apply morality to dentistry. In addition, he said that this event was full of profound insights into difficult topics pertaining to dentistry ethics and included suggestions on how to resolve some of those challenges, such as informed consent. He went into great detail on how breaching an ethical rule as a dentist could result in charges being brought against you. He did this by analysing relevant laws and real-world examples of what happens to businesspeople—or perhaps I should say, "professionals"—when they act unethically. During other portions of the programme, students would use made-up instances to facilitate group conversations in which they might pretend to be dentists and provide peer-to-peer mentorship while coming up with solutions for such ethical conundrums.
